He later completed a Master’s degree in Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy (Distinction) from University College London.

He has worked extensively across inpatient and outpatient settings, covering medical critical care units, general wards, and cardiopulmonary clinics. Leadership in Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy

At TTSH, Zi Yi served as the respiratory physiotherapy lead, where he managed care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions and led service improvement initiatives. In the Medical High Dependency Unit, he was instrumental in introducing early mobilisation protocols that improved recovery, reduced complications, and shortened hospital stays.

As physiotherapy lead for the Tracheostomy Workgroup, he optimised patient management and developed early weaning protocols, enabling critically ill patients to regain independent breathing and improving their quality of life. He was also one of the pioneers in expanding physiotherapy practice to include physiotherapy-led tracheostomy weaning.

Recognition

Zi Yi’s contributions have been widely recognised. In 2022, he received the Clinical Educator Award (Merit) for his commitment to education and mentorship. His work in tracheostomy management and early mobilisation has also been acknowledged institutionally as innovative and impactful in advancing acute care physiotherapy.

Professional Contributions

Beyond clinical practice, Zi Yi contributes to the development of allied health at a system level. In 2023, he was appointed co-lead for a track in the Centre for Allied Health and Pharmacy Excellence (CAPE), focusing on reinventing care for population health. He has also delivered several workshops and training sessions for multidisciplinary teams, strengthening knowledge and practice in cardiopulmonary physiotherapy.
